Men's Skincare Basics: A No-Nonsense Guide from Someone Who Gets It

Men's Skincare Basics: A No-Nonsense Guide from Someone Who Gets It

Hey, I'm Danny, the founder of &SOM Skin. A few years ago, I didn't know much about skincare beyond splashing water on my face and calling it a day. Fast forward to now, after countless hours of research and developing my products, I want to share what I've learned to help other men take better care of their skin—without overcomplicating things. You don't need a shelf full of products; just a few key steps done consistently can make a difference.

1. Start with a Clean Slate: Cleanse Morning and Night

Men's skin produces more oil because of the number of oil glands we have, approximately 20-30% more than women's, which can lead to a greasy look, acne, and breakouts. Washing your face twice daily—once in the morning and once at night—is non-negotiable. We want to remove all the dirt, oil, and toxins from the skin without drying it out.

When formulating our cleanser, I wanted something that could gently wipe away surface grime while drawing out impurities deep in the pores. Whether you use ours or another, make sure your cleanser works with your skin, not against it.

2. Moisturize to Keep Your Skin Happy

Most men think if they have oily skin, they shouldn't moisturize. WRONG. An overproduction of oil can be caused by dehydrated skin that's not nourished well. Moisturizing keeps your skin hydrated, helps it repair itself, and prevents that dry, tight feeling after washing. To find the right moisturizer, take our quiz or use a lightweight one—however, it usually goes lightweight for oily skin and richer for dry skin.

I ensured our moisturizer hydrates sincerely without making your skin feel greasy because who wants to walk around with a layer of oil on their face?

3. Sunscreen: The One Thing You Should Never Skip

If you're like me, you probably didn't grow up thinking about sunscreen unless you were hitting the beach. But here's the thing: daily sunscreen is the best anti-aging product. UV Rays are the fastest accelerators for aging skin, dark spots, and skin cancer.

Right now, we're developing a 100% natural SPF that you'll want to use daily. Until then, grab the Bioderma Kids one and add it to your morning routine.

4. Shave Smart, Stay Smooth

I don't shave. Shaving is tough on the skin, especially if you do it daily. Always use a sharp razor and a quality shaving gel. Shave in the direction of hair growth to reduce irritation, and finish with a soothing moisturizer.

If you're prone to bumps or ingrown hairs, exfoliating before shaving can greatly help.

5. Keep It Simple, Stay Consistent

The biggest mistake I see guys make is trying something for a short period of time, not seeing results the next day, and stopping. Nothing in life comes that quickly, so why would your skin? I see my skincare routine like my gym workouts. If I stick at it consistently for three months, I should start to see the rewards.

Final Thoughts

Look, I get it—skincare can feel like a minefield, especially with so many products out there. But it doesn't have to be. Start with these basics consistently and see how your skin responds. If you want to check out &SOM Skin, feel free. We've designed our products to be simple, effective, and made specifically for guys like us.

At the end of the day, I just want to help other men take better care of themselves, without all the fluff and toxins.

Until next week!
